Man charged With Murder Of Christy Hanley

A man, charged with the murder of 83-year-old Christy Hanley in May, has appeared before a District Court.

Noel Cawley, 46, of no fixed address was arrested on O'Connell Street in Dublin last Tuesday.

The well-known octogenarian horse dealer Christy Hanley was found last month badly beaten in his home in Kilbeggan. He was a regular fixture at racecourses around the country.

The accused man was taken to Athlone Garda Station where he was charged with the murder of the pensioner at Bridge Street, Kilbeggan in Co Westmeath.

Detective Sergeant Eamonn Curley told the court late last night that when charged the accused had nothing to say.

Judge John Neilan remanded Mr Cawley in custody.

At the request of his solicitor, the judge recommended to the Governor of Cloverhill Prison that he be kept in isolation from other prisoners due to fears for his safety.
