Dublin Holds Cluster Bomb Summit

Details of the international Cluster Bomb summit, taking place in Dublin, are to be revealed on Tuesday.

The Cluster Munitions Dublin Diplomatic Treaty Conference, which will draw up to 1,000 international delegates, will take place at Croke Park from May 19-30.

Cluster bombs are responsible for indiscriminately killing and injuring civilians when deployed, and are especially dangerous children who mistake the unexploded bombs for toys.

The thrust of the summit aims to agree a treaty banning the worldwide use of cluster bombs, and will be attended by delegates from Ireland, Austria, New Zealand, Norway, Mexico, Peru and the Vatican.

The Department of Foreign Affairs, the Irish Red Cross and international watchdog, the Cluster Munition Coalition, will also host a news briefing today on the summit.

Cluster munitions or cluster bombs are air-dropped or ground-launched munitions that eject a number of smaller submunitions or bomblets, which scatter in wide areas.

After the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, UN experts estimated that as many as one million unexploded bomblets contaminated the hundreds of strike sites in Lebanon.

The bombs are not specifically covered by any international legal agreement.

According to the UN, cluster bombs have been used in conflicts in at least 30 countries including Afghanistan, the Balkans, Cambodia, Israel, Lebanon, Sudan and Vietnam.
