Driver Drowns In Canal Tragedy As Salthill Body Recovered

Gardaí in Co Laois are investigating the circumstances of a car accident that has claimed the life of an elderly man near Portlaoise.

The man, who was in his 70s, was found dead inside his submerged car in the Grand Canal in Vickerstown at around midday yesterday.

Gardaí are investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, a separate investigation is underway after a body was found washed up on the shore in Galway city.

It is thought the body - which was found in Salthill last night - is that of a man aged between 35 and 40.

Gardai believe it had not been in the water for a long period of time.

Missing Co Mayo man, David Duffy, has been found safe and well, garda have reported. Garda had issued an appeal for help in tracing 36-year-old Mr Duffy, who had not been seen since Sunday. Garda have thanked the public for their help and said that no further action is needed.

A 25-year-old man who was missing from Harcourt Street in Dublin has been found safe and well, Gardaí have reported. Simon Quinn was reported missing after last being seen at around 2.30am on Monday, 30 July. However, Mr Quinn has now been found and Gardaí said they wish to thank the media and public for their assistance.

Missing Cork Man Found 'Safe And Well'
A missing 52-year-old man from Cork has been found 'safe and well', garda have reported. John Ryan was last seen in the Shanakiel area of Cork City on Wednesday, 24 May. However, Mr Ryan has now been located and no further action is required.

Man Dies In Stabbing Incident
A 30-year-old has died and a second man has been injured in a stabbing incident in Tullamore, Co Offaly, shortly after 7am this morning. It is believed there had been an argument in a house in the area and a Polish man was killed. The other man's injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Man Found Dead In Westmeath Is Named
A man found dead in a campervan at Lough Lene in County Westmeath on Thursday morning has been named as Thomas Canning, 42, from Summerhill. A man, in his 20s, is being detained at Mullingar Garda Station in connection with the death under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be held up to 9.00pm this evening.
