Dublin Canal Murder Victim Named

The man found murdered on the banks of Dublin's Grand Canal on Monday morning has been named as Darren Guerrine.

The 21-year-old's body was found shortly before 8am on Monday morning, on the banks of the canal between Kylemore Road and the Naas Road.

Post-mortem tests revealed that he had been shot once in the back of the head with a shotgun.

Gardaí are still trying to establish a motive for the killing, which has been described as "shocking".

It is understood that live ammunition was recovered from the scene and searches, involving garda sub-aqua divers, are also being carried out.

According to reports, Mr Guerrine, from La Touche Road in Bluebell, was known to gardaí because of a number of low-level criminal convictions, for drunk and disorderly behaviour and road traffic offences.

However, he had no convictions for any serious offences and gardaí said that there was no evidence that he was linked to any of the major criminal gangs in the area.

One theory being investigated is that the victim could have been lured to the canal, where his killer then ambushed him.
