Increase In Overseas Visitors To Ireland

The number of people visiting Ireland from overseas has increased by more than 70,000 over the past year, the latest figures from the Central Statistic Office have revealed.

There were 569,300 overseas trips to Ireland last November, compared to 497,500 in the same month the previous year.

More British residents also travelled to Ireland last year, with the number increasing by 36,600, while there was an increase of 33,300 in the number of trips to the country by residents of other European countries.

Visitors from North America also rose by 3,800, but trips by visitors from other areas fell by 1,800.

British travellers accounted for just over half of all overseas trips to Ireland (53%), while visitors from the US accounted for 10%.

There was also an increase in the number of trips abroad by Irish residents last year. There were 509,700 trips made by Irish residents to other countries in November 2007, an increase of 21,200 from November 2006's figure of 488,500.
