Nine Prisoners Charged Over Mobile Phone Possession

Nine men have appeared before Clover Hill District Court charged with having a mobile phone in prison.

The men are the first people to be charged with the offence. The ordinary penalty for possessing a mobile phone in prison is up to a year in jail or a maximum 5,000 euro fine.

The men charged were Gerard Clarke of Kilcarrig Grenn, Tallaght and Gerard Cully of Casement Grove, Finglas, both 21 years old; Sean Ward of Balcurris Road, Ballymun and Nevan Stokes of Palmers Close, Palmerstown, who are both 22; 25-year-olds Connor Murphy, Edgeworth Lawn, Dublin and Anthony Ward of address unknown; Andrius Ogorodnikas, Hunters Run, Clonee aged 27; 30-year-old Jonathan Burke of Ashlawn Court in Bray and 35-year-old John Harvey of Old Court Park, Bray.

They were charged with unlawfully possessing the phones under the new Prisons Act 2007 and all nine cases were remanded for a week.

On-Duty Firefighter Arrested On Suspicion Of Drink Driving
A fireman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving while on duty behind the wheel of a fire engine. The man was driving a fire truck on the Callan Road, Kilkenny over the weekend and approached a checkpoint. It is believed he was returning from an emergency incident and failed a breath test. He was issued a fixed charged penalty notice.

As the Euro value heads skywards, Irish shoppers are migrating north to cash in on the widening price gap. A survey by the National Consumer Council (NCC) has shown the disparity between the Republic's prices and that of the North is steadily growing, prompting shoppers to cross the border for their groceries.

Four men have appeared in court charged in separate drug seizure cases. In Co Cork, three men have appeared before Midleton District Court charged in connection with seizure of cocaine during an operation in Cobh.

Two Charged Over Cork Assault
Two men have been arrested in connection with a serious assault on a businessman at a Cork industrial estate on Tuesday. A man returning to his business at Churchfield Industrial Estate at about 16:45 on Tuesday was approached by two men, who demanded money. Following a struggle, the 30-year-old man was left with serious injuries.

Accused 'Blames Others' In Harte Murder
A police statement has been made on behalf of one of three men accused of the murder of Michaela McAreavey in Mauritius. Raj Theekoy, accused of conspiracy to murder, is said to have implicated two other men charged with murder.
