McEntee Unveils Crocus Garden At Iveagh House For Holocaust Remembrance
On 3 November, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Helen McEntee TD created a Crocus Garden at Iveagh House with Holocaust survivor Suzi Diamond and students from Stratford College, Dublin. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade worked with Holocaust Education Ireland, the organisation behind The Crocus Project, a schools programme inviting pupils to plant yellow crocus bulbs in memory of the 1.5 million Jewish children murdered in the Holocaust and the thousands of other children who were victims of Nazi atrocities.
Opening the Crocus Garden at Iveagh House, Minister McEntee said: "As these flowers bloom and fill the garden here at Iveagh House, they will serve as a reminder of the devastating consequences of hatred, prejudice and antisemitism, and of the one and a half million Jewish children murdered in the Holocaust, and of the millions of other victims of Nazi persecution. "At a time when antisemitism continues to rise internationally, programmes such as The Crocus Project help ensure that the memory of those who were murdered is preserved and that the lessons of the Holocaust continue to inform younger generations. Ireland remains firmly committed to Holocaust remembrance, education and combatting antisemitism."
Minister McEntee praised Holocaust Education Ireland for developing and expanding The Crocus Project internationally, thanked Suzi Diamond for her contribution to remembrance and education, and remembered Holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental, who passed away earlier this year, noting his decades of engagement with students and lasting legacy in Ireland.
The Crocus Project encourages young people to learn about the Holocaust and to reflect on the dangers of antisemitism, racism, discrimination and intolerance. Begun in Ireland, it has since grown to involve hundreds of thousands of students across Europe and beyond.
The garden at Iveagh House is intended as a lasting symbol of remembrance, education and hope, underscoring Ireland's commitment to combatting antisemitism and to protecting and promoting human rights.
