Minister Browne Issues Polling Day Order For Seanad Bye-Election
Mr. James Browne, T.D., Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, has today (24 September 2026) signed a Polling Day Order for a Seanad bye-election to fill the seat vacated following the election of Senator Seán Kyne to Dáil Éireann.
Senator Kyne had been returned to the Seanad at the 2025 Seanad General Election from the Oireachtas Sub-Panel of the Cultural and Educational Panel.
Key dates for the bye-election are as follows: the deadline for receipt of nominations is 12 noon on Tuesday 6 October 2026; the Seanad Returning Officer will sit to rule on nominations on Friday 16 October 2026; ballot papers will issue on Friday 23 October 2026; and the poll will close at 11 a.m. on Friday 6 November 2026.
The electorate for this contest comprises the members of Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann.
Senator Kyne had been returned to the Seanad at the 2025 Seanad General Election from the Oireachtas Sub-Panel of the Cultural and Educational Panel.

Gardaí have renewed their appeal for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision on the R341 Ballyconneely Road in Clifden, Co Galway, on Monday 21 September 2026, after the cyclist involved died from his injuries. The crash, which involved a car and a bicycle, occurred at about 2:40pm.

Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien and Minister of State with responsibility for Road Safety Seán Canney have signed regulations increasing the minimum legal age for e-scooter riders from 16 to 18. The measure takes effect on 2 October 2026. At the same time, the government has doubled charges for the detention and storage of seized e-scooters.
