Sinn Féin Calls For Immediate Energy Credits Amid Rising Arrears
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Finance, Pearse Doherty TD, has stated that the most recent data from the energy regulator indicates a deeply concerning scenario regarding the financial pressures experienced by households nationwide.
The Donegal TD highlighted new figures published by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU), which reveal that, for the first time, more than half a million families hold energy accounts in arrears. This includes 319,000 households unable to pay their electricity bills and 183,000 facing difficulties with their gas bills.
While addressing Minister Peter Burke today in the Dáil, Deputy Doherty warned that utility providers have announced subsequent price hikes. He stated: "At a time when many families are already trying to keep pace with rising costs, energy bills are set to rise again. Last week the biggest energy supplier – Electric Ireland – announced sharp increases and there wasn't a peep from you in Cabinet or in Government!"
Deputy Doherty remarked that citizens are exhausted following years of escalating costs: "They have cut back where they can. They have adjusted their own budgets and absorbed increase after increase. But many feel there is no end in sight."
He further noted: "The most frustrating thing is that all this is happening at a time when you have unprecedented financial resources at Government's disposal."
Deputy Doherty urged the Government to intervene immediately before the latest tariff increases come into force: "Timely action now, including energy credits, would ease the pressure on workers, families and pensioners who are already struggling to keep up.
"So, will you act now? Will you listen? Will you provide energy credits as an immediate solution for people who are really struggling?
"And what exactly is your answer to the hundreds of thousands of families who are facing mounting energy costs and financial strain?"
