Concern Over Appointment For HSE Contract

The recent appointment of a contractor for the new 60 bed ward at University Hospital Limerick has come under serious criticism.

Western Building Systems landed the contract for the development, while the firm is in the middle of being sued by the Department of Education.

This comes after building defects were found in the 42 schools WBS built for the State over the last few years.

Local Limerick TD for Sinn Féin, Maurice Quinlivan has called for clarity on the company's responsibility in the defected buildings.

He added: "Until these facts are established, I would have assumed current tenders from this company would be under review, and new tenders not accepted, until the full facts are established.

"I am extremely concerned that this news could result in delays for the new ward, which is critically needed at UHL.

"University Hospital Limerick is the most overcrowded hospital in the State, and more beds are urgently needed. We cannot afford any more delays.

"However, safety is paramount and value for public money is incredibly important. I would expect Minister Harris to address these concerns as a matter of priority.

"People in Limerick have waited too long for quality health care facilities; more delays and issues are not acceptable."
