Mandatory Bike Registration Necessary To Combat Theft - Fine Gael
Fine Gael is calling for mandatory registration of all bikes sold in Ireland in order to counter a rise in theft.
Dublin Senator Catherine Noone's comments follow a recent report which showed that 4,000 bicycles were stolen across Dublin last year.
She called for registration to be made a mandatory requirement of bike ownership: "Currently we do not have any central database of bikes owned in Dublin and registration can be done through some online sites but this remains a minority and voluntary endeavour. By introducing registration of all bikes at shops and other outlets, we can ensure that the vast majority of new bikes on our streets are registered.
"This means that in the unfortunate, but sadly not unusual, event that a bike is stolen, registration details can be provided to the Gardaí who can then correctly identify the owner of the bike. This will not interfere with any other aspect of cycling in Dublin."
Senator Noone added: "Introducing such a measure, will provide a greater deterrent to would-be thieves and also more security for bicycle owners of whom, some are being put off using their bikes in the city for fear of theft.
"We cannot allow this situation to go unchecked, implementing mandatory registration will be a first step in the right direction to reducing bike theft figures."

Expansion Of Dublin Bike Scheme Gets Underway
The introduction of almost 1,000 new bicycles and 58 additional hire points begins today in the €35 million expansion of the Dublin Bike Scheme. New bike stations have been opened this morning at North Wall Quay in the Docklands and Deverell Place off Gardiner Street, and the jire station at Talbot Street have been extended.

Bike thefts in Ireland have increased by 227% in the last ten years, figures from An Garda Síochána have revealed. With more than 2,100 bikes stolen last year, according to a report by RTÉ, garda have launched a campaign to target the problem. Bikes are being left as bait, which are trackable if stolen.

Teen Killed In Quad Bike Accident
A teenager has died in a quad bike accident in Co Limerick. The incident happened on the R507 Oola to Doon Road at around 1.45pm on Tuesday. It is thought the 17-year-old male lost control of the bike and collided with a tractor that was cutting hedges along the narrow road. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
