The body of Rose Hanrahan was discovered at her home in Thomondgate by family members at about 1.30pm on Friday 15 December.

Initially garda were treating the death as suspicious, however, following the results of a post-mortem examination, garda said they are now treating it as a murder inquiry.

An appeal for information has been launched.

It is understood that garda are examining CCTV footage from security cameras near the elderly woman's home. And house-to-house enquiries are ongoing.

Sinn Féin TD for Limerick Maurice Quinlivan expressed his horror at the woman's death, and has on anyone with any information in relation to the incident to bring it forward to the Gardaí.

The Limerick TD said: "Whilst the Garda investigation is ongoing and we await the results from the post-mortem I, along with the local community, am shocked at the terrible news of the death of Rosie Hanrahan in her home.

"Thomondgate is a lovely place to live and I want to condemn in the strongest terms possible what seems to have been a despicable attack on an older person who was loved and respected in our community.

"Some people will know or suspect who may have done this and I would urge anyone with information to come forward to An Garda Síochána as a matter of urgency."
