ESB Crews Working To Restore Power In Inis Meáin And Inis Oírr

Irish energy firm ESB hopes to restore power to residents living in Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr following a major power outage over the weekend.

Crews are continuing to work to restore the power, however the firm said: "Due to the complexity of repairing undersea cables, initial indications are that both islands may be without power for a number of days.

"Any customers who use electrically powered medical devices should contact their healthcare professional to make alternative arrangements if necessary."

Irish Water has also been forced to shut down the water treatment plant on Inis Meáin due to the power outage.

Night time restrictions have been imposed on Inis Meáin to conserve the available water.

In a statement, Irish Water said: "Irish Water has a generator installed at the Inis Oirr water treatment plant and the utility is making provisions to have a generator transported to the Inis Meáin water treatment plant. This may lead to disruptions while the generator is being commissioned.

"Irish Water and Galway County Council are working hard to ensure there is as little disruption as possible to tourism, business and normal daily life."
