Man Claims He Found Rifle 'In A Field'

A 23-year-old man has been jailed for two years after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm, which he claimed he found in a field.

It is understood the man claimed he found the firearm, believed to be a rifle, "when he cycled over it in a field", before he took it home and put it inside a wall of his home.

The rifle was found by gardai inside the wall as they searched the man's home over an unrelated matter.

The man is reported to have said the rifle was "one of those things you just don't throw away".

It is understood the man was on temporary release from a previous attempted robbery conviction.

A suspended one year sentence of the previous conviction was reactivated and he was sentenced to a further two years for the new firearms offence, with one year suspended.
