Fianna Fáil Call For Minor Ailment Scheme Roll-Out
Fianna Fáil has called on the government to roll-out a Minor Ailment Scheme to help provide patients with quicker access to appropriate healthcare.
The party's TD for Louth Seamus Kirk , raised the issue in the Dáil with Minister of State at the Department of Health Kathleen Lynch.
Deputy Kirk said: "Research shows us that up to 95% of people’s day-to-day health and social care needs can be met in the primary care setting. It is therefore vital that we expand community based healthcare, and one way this can be achieved is by rolling out a Minor Ailment Scheme.
"The introduction of a Minor Ailment Scheme will allow local pharmacists to provide treatment for minor ailments such as a headache, heartburn and hay fever. It is estimated that nearly 20% of a GP’s workload is spent dealing with such minor ailments. The introduction of a Minor Ailment Scheme will reduce the burden on GP practices across the country and will ease pressure across our health system.
"It is estimated that the introduction of a Minor Ailment Scheme could lead to 750,000 extra GP consultations each year. This will free up manpower in countless GP practices that are already stretched to the limit, and expected to be put under even further pressure following the introduction of free GP care for under 6’s.
"The UK introduced a ‘Pharmacy First Scheme’ based along the lines of a Minor Ailment Scheme. It has been hugely successful to date and research carried out in the UK has concluded that over 90% of patients reported a complete resolution of their symptoms after having attended their local pharmacist.
"I raised this matter with Minister Kathleen Lynch in the Dáil recently. The Minister admitted that there are advantages associated with the introduction of a Minor Ailment Scheme. With this in mind I am calling for the Government to introduce such a scheme as soon as it is feasible to do so."

Woman In Serious Condition Following Knife Attack In Cobh
A woman is in a serious condition in hospital following a knife attack in Cobh, Co Cork. According to reports, the woman and her teenage daughter were attacked at a house in Cooline Avenue on Tuesday morning. The daughter is understood to have received minor injuries in the incident and was released from hospital following treatment.

Man Assaulted In Dublin
A man has been injured after being attacked in Dublin on Thursday. The victim was assaulted by three men in their late teens near the junction of Merrion Street Lower/Fenian Street, at approximately 2.30am. He was struck from behind and knocked to the ground. Property was taken from him which has since been recovered. He suffered minor injuries.

Garda Officer Injured In Hit-And-Run
A garda officer has been injured in a hit-and-run incident in Ballina, Co Mayo. Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the incident, involving to officers on foot patrol. It is understood that the officers tried to stop a car at about 18:00, however, the car failed to stop and one of the officers sustained minor injuries to his leg.

Arrest Made In Co Kerry Father And Son Stabbing Investigation
Gardaí investigating a stabbing incident in Co Kerry in which a father and son were injured have made an arrest. In the incident a 47-year-old man and his 17-year-old son suffered minor stab wounds after interrupting a man suspected of trying to break into their car. The attack happened early on Tuesday morning on Woodbrook Lawn.
