Sinn Féin Calls For 'Immediate Action' On Border Criminal Gangs
Sinn Féin has called for "immediate and urgent action" to tackle organised criminal gangs in border regions.
The party's president, Gerry Adams, has called for more cooperation between An Garda Síochána and the PSNI to "tackle the scourge of organised criminal gangs in the north Louth and South Armagh region."
The Louth TD made his call after the attempted murder of south Armagh man Francis McCabe Jnr in a bomb attack on Wednesday morning.
"There has been a serious escalation in the activities of organised criminal gangs in north Louth and south Armagh in recent years. This includes fuel laundering, tobacco smuggling, the theft of farm machinery and animals, the murder of Garda Adrian Donohoe, and a campaign of violent intimidation of residents who are standing up against these activities," Mr Adams said.
"Sinn Féin is resolutely opposed to criminality. We will continue to provide leadership and to stand against these organised criminal gangs.
"It is the responsibility of the PSNI and An Garda Síochána to investigate criminality, identify those responsible, and bring them before the courts. To achieve this more policing resources are needed and I will be raising this with the relevant authorities.
"Urgent discussions involving the government and the Executive are also needed to put in place strategies that ensure that the border cannot be exploited by these gangs."

Operation Fiacla has been established in response to the rise in burglaries, which increased nationally by 8% last year, and by more than 40% in some areas.

Organised Crime Op Leads To 14 Arrests
An investigation into organized crime has led to the arrest of a total of 14 people in County Calow, Meath and Wexford. Gardaí said on Monday the arrests were part of an ongoing investigation into organised criminal activity and drug trafficking in the South East of the country.
