An investigation into organized crime has led to the arrest of a total of 14 people in County Calow, Meath and Wexford.

Gardaí said on Monday the arrests were part of an ongoing investigation into organised criminal activity and drug trafficking in the South East of the country.

During the operation, Gardaí from Carlow, assisted by Regional and National Units and officers from Revenue Customs Service carried out searches at 27 locations in the South East of the country.

The areas searched included homes and businesses in Counties Carlow, Meath, Offaly, Laois, Tipperary and Waterford.

As a result of the searches, 14 separate arrests were made; 12 in Co. Carlow, one in County Meath and one in County Wexford. Those arrested are being detained at a number of Garda Stations in the South East. They range in age from 18 to 54 and include 12 males and two females. All are being detained under Section 50, Criminal Justice Act.

During one of these searches a large consignment of contraband cigarettes was discovered.

Since the establishment of the operation there have been 18 seizures of controlled substances and cash in Carlow and throughout the South East area. The total value of drugs seized to date amounts to €4.4 million and includes cannabis, cocaine and amphetamine.
