Special Garda Operation Established To Tackle Traveling Criminal Gangs

The Garda Commissioner has announced the formation of a special garda operation to target mobile criminal gangs involved in robberies all over the country.

Operation Fiacla has been established in response to the rise in burglaries, which increased nationally by 8% last year, and by more than 40% in some areas.

Martin Callinan said there have already been arrests in at least three counties and two men are being questioned about 20 burglaries.

Much of the increase is due to urban gangs travelling to break into homes and businesses in the country.

The Garda Commissioner announced Operation Fiacla at the GRA conference last night.

The Garda Representative Association have pointed to the increase in burglaries and robberies as further evidence of the need for increased resources and garda stations in rural areas.
