Appeal Following Carjacking In Longford

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses following an alleged assault and carjacking incident in Longford.

Shortly before 6pm on Wednesday (29 October), a woman in her 40s was confronted at knife point by two males as she returned to her car on Ballymahon Street, Longford.

She was forced into the vehicle by the men and driven from the scene at speed. The car was observed and followed by Gardaí.

A short time later the car left the road and struck a ditch. This occurred on the Athlone Road.

Following the crash, the woman was taken to Mullingar Hospital for treatment. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. A male, in his 20s, was also taken to Tullamore Hospital for injuries, while a second male fled the scene on foot.

A short time later, Gardaí arrested a man a short distance away. He is currently being detained at Longford Garda Station.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the carjacking and are asking for anyone who was in the vicinity of a car park – known locally as Heaton's Car Park – on Ballymahon Street, Longford, between 5.30pm and 6pm to contact them.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Longford Garda Station on 043 -3350570, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
