Phil Hogan Appointed EU Agriculture And Development Commissioner

Fine Gael's Phil Hogan has been appointed the new European Union's Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development.

The former Minister for the Environment was nominated for the position in July by the Taoiseach Enda Kenny. H will now be responsible for approximately 40% of the total EU budget.

Mr Hogan will now face hearings in front of the relevant European Parliament committees, where he will be asked to lay out his vision for the job.

A number of announcements have been made today for some of the 28 new EU Commissioners.

The final decision on the make up of the commission will be decided by a full plenary session of the European parliament in October.
