Former Cork Lord Mayor Denies Sexual Assault Charges
A former Lord Mayor of Cork has denied six charges of sexual assault of a teenage girl between March 1996 and October 1998.
83-year-old John Murray is standing trial charged with six counts of sexually assaulting the girl at four locations in the city over a two-year period.
Mr Murray, a retired taxi driver from Gregg Road in Cork city, was a Labour City Councillor on Cork Corporation for 14 years from 1985.
In 1993, he was elected Lord Mayor but failed to hold onto his seat in the 1999 local elections.
The woman told Cork Circuit Criminal Court that the alleged abuse started when she was a young teenager on a date unknown between March and April 1996.
Mr Murray has denied all six charges.
The trial is ongoing.

Young Man Dies In Cork City Assault
A 20 year-old man has lost his life in an assault in Cork city. Gardaí rushed to the scene on Brandon Road following the assault at around 9.20pm on Thursday evening, 16 January. The victim was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment to "life-threatening injuries" before being pronounced dead.
