NRA Propose Toll Exemption Pilot Scheme For Hauliers

Motorway tolling companies have been asked to consider a month long pilot scheme exempting hauliers from paying road tolls.

The National Roads Authority (NRA) has devised the scheme in an effort to encourage hauliers onto motorways and off local and regional roads.

Concerns have been raised over a decline in the number of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) using the national network as well as the damage being caused to regional roads not designed to carry the weight of large vehicles.

The Irish Independent have estimated the potential cost of a one-month pilot scheme to be around €3m, with the NRA presumably responsible for making up the shortfall.

It is understood that the scheme aims to discover if it is the cost of paying tolls that are discouraging hauliers from using the motorway network.
