Government Expected To Agree Construction Stimulus Package

A construction industry stimulus package, estimated to be worth some €200 million, is to be approved today by the government.

The Irish Independent has reported that projects expected to benefit from the money include new school and education facilities, social housing, roads and communication networks.

A number of different government departments have been co-ordinated by public expenditure minister Brendan Howlin, with final details of the plan expected to be agreed at a cabinet meeting today (Tuesday).

Enda Kenny Is Elected Taoiseach
Enda Kenny has been elected taoiseach of the Irish parliament, 70 days after the country's general election took place. With support from a number of Independents, Mr Kenny was elected by 59 votes to 49 in the Dáil on Friday afternoon. It was the fourth attempt by the Dáil to elect a taoiseach since Ireland's election 10 weeks ago.
