Tourist Road Safety Initiative Launched

A new road safety initiative for tourists has been launched in an effort to reduce the number of accidents involving visitors.

Since 2009, some 56 tourists have been killed or seriously injured on Irish roads.

Following calls for a greater garda presence on the roads, assistant Garda Commissioner Gerard Phillips used the launch to defended garda road safety efforts.

He is reported to have said that the number of traffic police remains the same despite an overall drop in the number of garda officers.
