FF Propose New Hit-And-Run Bill

A new draft Bill has been proposed by Fianna Fåil to impose tougher penalties on people found guilty of hit-and-run offences.

Currently the maximum sentence for leaving the scene of an accident is six months in prison.

The new proposal would see the offence become indictable and open the possibility to be prosecuted in the Circuit Court where a term of up to ten years could be imposed.

It also includes an extension to the time-frame in which a suspect can be tested for drugs and alcohol, bringing Ireland into line with other jurisdictions.
