TD Calls For Burglars To Pay For Damages

The Dáil has heard a proposal that burglars should be made to pay for the damage they cause, regardless of whether they get a custodial sentence.

Noting the 30% increases in house burglaries in Waterford city, Independent TD John Halligan made the call.

The Waterford TD said he was "not here to make any direct attack on the judiciary" but he had often seen when "an out of touch judge, because of some do-gooder, will say kind words about the perpetrator and the victim is left abandoned", according to the Irish Times.
