300 Staff Laid Off As HMV Stores Remain Closed

The receiver of HMV, Deloitte, has confirmed that 300 staff will be made redundant and 16 stores will remain closed.

All of its stores were making a loss and a buyer was unable to be found.

The staff had temporarily been laid off in January.

The employees will receive statutory redundancy pay.

HMV Ireland Remain Closed Despite UK Move
HMV Ireland stores will remain closed and vouchers will not be accepted or honoured. This is despite a change in the UK where shops remain open and administrators have said gift vouchers will be accepted from tomorrow. Deloitte UK said that after assessing HMV's books, vouchers will now be honoured.

Nursing staff at Galway University Hospital's emergency department are to stage a demonstration over a lack of beds and staff shortages. It follows a statement released on Tuesday by SIPTU calling for the lifting of an embargo on nursing staff and care assistants' recruitment.

Equality Tribunal Awards Woman €20,000
A woman has been awarded €20,000 compensation for discriminatory dismissal after being made redundant from an accountancy firm when six months pregnant. The Equality Tribunal found that KA Accountants and Financial Advisors had discriminated against its former employee on the grounds of gender.

Protest Underway At Clerys Department Store
Hundreds of protesters have gathered outside Clerys department store in Dublin in support of workers. More than 130 staff were informed the company had been placed into administration and they would be made redundant. The protest was mounted following reports that staff at the store would be offered a basic redundancy package.
