Right-To-Die Case To Appear Before Supreme Court
The 19th February has been set as the provisional date to hear the appeal of a terminally ill woman, who last week lost her challenge to the ban on assisted suicide.
59-year-old Marie Fleming, who has multiple sclerosis, launched a High Court challenge over her right to die.
He action sought to have the law on assisted suicide declared invalid under the Constitution and incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights.
However, saying any relaxation of the ban would adversely affect wider society, as it would be open to abuse, a three-judge divisional High Court ruled against her.
Her challenge will now be heard by seven judges of the Supreme Court, with the case being fast-tracked in consideration to Ms Fleming's medical condition.
Ms Fleming was awarded the costs of her High Court case despite losing it because the issues raised were deemed to be of exceptional public importance.

A landmark High Court case has been launched, by a woman who is terminally ill, to establish a right to end her life with assistance. Marie Fleming from Wicklow was diagnosed with MS in 1986 and is in the final stages of the condition. The Fleming Group has collective debts of €1bn. Last year, the High Court appointed an examiner to attempt to devise a plan to secure the future of the beleaguered company.
