Leaving Cert Appeals Reach Record Numbers

The number of students appealing the results of this year's Leaving Certificate exams has increased significantly.

A total of 17,037 appeals were lodged by more than 9,000 students according to the State Examinations Commission (SEC). That represents appeals for more than 4% of all grades awarded- a 74% increase in the number of students seeking a second opinion compared to last year, and an 87% increase in the amount of decisions to be appealed.

The rise follows a successful High Court challenge to change appeal procedures, with the process to be sped up by over three weeks. Students can now expect to receive the outcome of their appeal around mid-September.
