Woman Awarded €2.8m In Civil Sexual Abuse Case

A woman, who was raped and sexually abused as a child by her godfather, has been awarded €2.8m in damages in a civil action she brought to the High Court.

Marcella Breslin sued Patrick Gillespie for sexually abusing her when she was aged between 12 and 16 years.

A jury at the High Court awarded the mother of three €2.8m to include aggravated and exemplary damages.

Patrick Gillespie was jailed for seven years in 2008 after being convicted of rape and sexual assault.

Almost 12,000 people contact the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre in 2015, the organisation has reported. The official figures shows that half of those contacting the national helpline were doing so for the first time about rape or sexual abuse.

Senator Ivana Bacik is launching a landmark report published by the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) entitled 'Say Something', which documents students' experiences of harassment, stalking, violence and sexual assaults. 'Plan Ahead' For St Patrick's Day Events This Weekend
Belfast City Council has outlined traffic and travel arrangements ahead of this Sunday's St Patrick's Day event in Belfast. A number of traffic diversions will be in place in and around Belfast city centre.
