Three On Trial For 2009 Rape

Three men have gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court accused of raping a woman in Cork in 2009.

In an opening statement, prosecuting counsel told the jury that the woman will tell the trial the men were in a van which contained a mattress in the back.

The court heard the woman had been on a mystery bus tour with friends in September 2009, and was quite drunk by the end of the night.

She got separated from her friends after being in a pub on the suburbs of Cork. She was captured on CCTV footage unsteady on her feet outside a nearby school.

A white van pulled up and she does not remember how she got into it. There was a mattress in the back and she understood there to be three men and a woman inside.

Opening the case against the three men, who cannot be named, the prosecution said the van went to a remote area and one of the men got into the back and physically and sexually assaulted her.

Senior Counsel for the prosecution, Patrick McCarthy, said the man had sex with the woman and the two other men in turn did so.

The woman had her driving licence with her and it was used to find her address and drop her home, the court heard.

One of the men then stole her car, which led to their arrest.

The trial continues.
