Off Duty Gardaí Left With Serious Head Injuries After Weekend Attack

An off-duty garda has suffered a serious head injury after he was assaulted by a group of teenagers in Limerick at the weekend.

The Co Galway based garda was walking home from a night out in the town when he attacked.

He was struck in the face and hit his head on the ground during the attack around 3.30am on Sunday morning in the St Patrick’s Road area of Limerick.

He was returning home from a night out with his wife when the couple were approached by a group of teenagers.

It is understood the victim, who is in his 20s and based in Gort, was in Limerick for the weekend visiting his wife’s family.

He suffered a fractured skull in the attack, and was being treated at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick yesterday. Detectives do not believe the garda was targeted because of his occupation and investigating officers have described the incident as unprovoked.
