Blood Transfusion Service Ordered To Pay Redundancy

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service has been ordered to pay nearly €5,000 in redundancy payments to an ex-employee, let go from her job almost two years ago.

49-year-old Connie McEvoy from Artane, Dublin, who worked with the board for four years, received the award after an Employment Appeals Tribunal hearing yesterday.

Ms McEvoy began working with the board in August 2006 as a donor assistant at the organisation's offices on D'Olier Street, Dublin.

Her contract was subsequently renewed one year later after a permanent member of staff took a career break.

However, when the career break ended in October 2010, the Irish Blood Transfusion Servive said "the specific purpose for which Ms McEvoy was employed also ceased".

It said redundancy payment did not arise in Ms McEvoy's case as she was employed on a temporary basis and on a "specific-purpose contract".

SIPTU, representing Ms McEvoy argued that Ms McEvoy had exceeded the required working time to qualify for statutory redundancy payment.
