N5 Open To The Public

After 16 months of construction and an investment of €26 million, the N5 Longford Bypass opens 2 months ahead of schedule.

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar, welcomed the opening of the N5 Longford Bypass. "The bypass will dramatically improve the town environment for residents, traders and the public in general. It will reduce journey times between the Greater Dublin area and Mayo, Sligo and Roscommon by removing a significant bottleneck and will free Longford Town from gridlock, making the town more attractive for commerce. More importantly, the bypass will also result in enhanced safety benefits by the provision of a safer section of route."

Mr. Peter Malone, Chairman National Roads Authority stated: "The Longford Bypass will remove unnecessary traffic from the town centre, improve safety and assist in creating opportunities for local businesses. Additionally, it will allow residents and tourists alike to experience all that is on offer throughout the entire region."

Mr. Michael Nolan, Head of Regional Management National Roads Authority added: "The N5 Longford Bypass project consists of 2.6km of single carriageway, a bridge spanning the river Camlin and the realignment of local and regional roads. I would like to congratulate our local authority colleagues and the contractor (Wills Bros Ltd) for delivering the scheme ahead of schedule."
