Boy Maimed By Pipe Bomb Undergoing Further Tests
A young boy, who suffered serious injuries when he picked up a pipe bomb left on the doorstep of his home, was last night undergoing further medical tests.
Five-year-old PJ Duffy remained in a serious but stable condition at Crumlin Children's Hospital in Dublin.
He has lost three fingers on one hand but doctors are hoping to save damaged fingers on the other.
The boy also sustained wounds to one eye and other parts of his face as well as injuries to his body and legs.
Detectives from the Special Branch are backing up local garda and the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation as they try to establish a motive for the attack.
The device was left outside the Duffy home at Sycamore Drive in Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow, some time between 9pm on Tuesday and 8am on Wednesday.
Gardai said last night they were following a number of lines of inquiry. They said an examination of the remains of the pipe bomb indicated it was not the usual crudely constructed device and contained a more sophisticated element.

Helicopter 'Top Cover' As Bomb Defused
A residential suburb of Co Antrim returned to normal yesterday evening after the Army dealt with a pipe bomb in Harmin Park, Glengormley. The PSNI helicopter was overhead of the Newtownabbey district - close to north Belfast - for most of Monday afternoon and some residents were asked to leave their homes, while the examination was carried out.
