Man Charged With Running Brothel Is Senior Government Advisor

A man charged yesterday with operating brothels and living off the earnings of prostitutes was a senior transport consultant who offered advice to the Government on a major infrastructure project.

54-year-old Thomas Lyons was charged with seven counts under the Criminal Law Sexual Offences Act, and one count of making a false statement to gardai.

Mr Lyons is a senior consultant with Atkins Ireland, which has been involved in advising Fingal County Council and designing support services for the Metro West light rail project in Dublin.

He faced the charges yesterday alongside 43-year-old Zelandia Silva; also charged with seven counts under the Criminal Law Sexual Offences Act yesterday

Mr Lyons and Ms Silva, who is from Brazil, were each charged with three counts of operating brothels at apartments in Limerick City between August 2010 and June 2011.

The pair were arrested yesterday, after presenting themselves at Henry Street garda station in Limerick.

According to Atkins Ireland's website, Mr Lyons is the company's contact point for the Metro West light rail project, and is their 'Head of Transportation Dublin'.

The trial will begin on September 5.

On-Duty Firefighter Arrested On Suspicion Of Drink Driving
A fireman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving while on duty behind the wheel of a fire engine. The man was driving a fire truck on the Callan Road, Kilkenny over the weekend and approached a checkpoint. It is believed he was returning from an emergency incident and failed a breath test. He was issued a fixed charged penalty notice.

Retired Consultant Surgeon Charged With 25 Counts Of Indecent Assault
A retired consultant surgeon has appeared in court accused of indecently assaulting 16 young males over three decades at Our Lady's Hospital in Drogheda. Dr Michael Shine, 80, of Wellington Road in Dublin, was charged with 25 counts of indecent assault. He denied all 24 charges, and he said he was not in Ireland at the time of the other charge.

Ex-Christian Brother Charged With 138 Counts Of Sexual Assault
A former Christian Brother has been charged with 138 counts of indecent assault on boys at a primary school in Limerick city more than 30 years ago. Séamus Treacy, 70, of Ashton Close, Swords, Dublin, appeared before Limerick District Court yesterday on the charges which concern 13 alleged victims.
