Retired Consultant Surgeon Charged With 25 Counts Of Indecent Assault

A retired consultant surgeon has appeared in court accused of indecently assaulting 16 young males over three decades at Our Lady's Hospital in Drogheda.

Dr Michael Shine, 80, of Wellington Road in Dublin, was charged with 25 counts of indecent assault.

He denied all 24 charges, and he said he was not in Ireland at the time of the other charge.

He was remanded on bail, and Gardai asked that Mr Shine surrender his passport and sign on once a week at Donnybrook Garda Station as part of his bail conditions.

His defence solicitor objected the signing and surrendering of his passport.

His lawyer said that he had planned to go on holidays to the Canary Islands in August for a couple of months.

Judge Dunne decided not to impose the signing on order and he did not have to surrender his passport.

He was remanded on bail in his own bond of €5000, and told that he must directly inform gardai and the main investigating officer if he plans to change address.
