Car Crash Victim Was Known Teen Hijacker

The man killed yesterday in a head on collision in Meath is said to be a 16-year-old taxi hijacker suspected by the gardai in a series of robberies including a post office raid.

Named last night as Bernard ‘Barney’ McDonagh, the teenager died yesterday when the stolen car he was driving crashed head on into a van. The second man in the car, aged 18, is in a critical condition in hospital.

The couple in the van were not badly injured but said to be left traumatised after the incident.

The Toyota Avensis McDonagh was driving had been hijacked at knife point 30 minutes earlier in Inchicore. A six inch serrated knife was recovered by gardai near the car at the scene of the crash.

The two men flagged down the taxi but as soon as they got in they threatened the driver with the knife, telling him to drive off. However he managed to jump out and run off.

The hijackers then drove on to the M50 and headed northwards. Gardai said their intended destination had not yet been established.

"They must have been travelling at some speed to reach Glasallen in 40 minutes," an officer said.

Investigators believe the driver lost control of the car at Glasallen and it swerved across the road into a Citroen Berlingo van travelling towards Slane.

It is believed the car struck the van with a glancing blow and then smashed into the tree. The impact of the collision resulted in the two occupants being thrown from the taxi and into a thorn hedge.

Both teenagers were rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where Mr McDonagh was pronounced dead.

Gardai said it was not yet clear which of the teenagers had been driving the car at the time of the crash.
