Weekend Armagh Rape Is Investigated

Police in the North are investigating a Co Armagh rape at the weekend.

The woman victim was attacked on Sunday in the early hours of the morning in Armagh City's Cathedral Road area.

The PSNI has appealed for information about the attack, which occurred at about 3am on Sunday.

Her attacker was described as 5ft 9ft to 6ft tall, of medium build with dark hair and a fringe.

He was wearing a grey zip-up jacket, jeans and he had a black scarf pulled up over his face. He also smelt of cigarette smoke.

SDLP Armagh City Cllr Mealla Campbell has condemned the rape.

Cllr Campbell, who lives close to the place of the attack, said: "This must have been a terrifying experience for the woman who was raped and my thoughts are with her at this awful time.

"This attack has shocked and frightened people in our community and I strongly appeal to anyone with information to pass it onto the police immediately.

"I hope that the victim now gets all the help and support she needs to try to recover from this traumatic ordeal," she added.

Almost 12,000 people contact the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre in 2015, the organisation has reported. The official figures shows that half of those contacting the national helpline were doing so for the first time about rape or sexual abuse.

Calls To Dublin Rape Crisis Centre Increase
12,192 contacts were answered by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre’s National 24-Hour Helplinein 2013, its highest figure since 2009, according to the latest annual report. 9,614 of the calls were genuine counselling contacts, an increase of 5% compared with 2012 figures. 43% of calls related to adult rape, an increase of 3% compared with 2012 figures.
