Belfast Arrest After Taxi Row Victim Dies

A man has been charged in connection with the death of a man fatally injured in an attack at a Belfast taxi depot on Sunday.

The 60-year-old victim who was assaulted in the city centre at the weekend passed away in hospital.

The victim, Joe O'Neill from Brooke Park in west Belfast, was involved in a row with two men at a taxi rank in King Street and was then attacked nearby at about 1.15am on Sunday.

Mr O'Neill suffered multiple head injuries with two men believed to have run off towards Divis Street after the assault.

Now, this afternoon, a 34-year-old man has reported to have been charged in connection with the death on Sunday.

Joe O'Neill, a father-of-two sustained multiple head injuries after he was involved in the altercation and died on Monday morning with a murder investigation launched by the PSNI.

Detectives from the PSNI's Serious Crime Branch are appealing for witnesses. They want to talk to anyone who was in the King Street/Castle Street area around the time of the incident.

Sinn Fein Councillor Matt Garrett has offered his deepest sympathy to the family: "Joe was a neighbour of mine and I know he will be sadly missed by all the people of Brooke and Moore Park.

"It is a tragedy for his relatives and we offer deepest sympathy to his wider family and friends.

"Anyone with any information on the incident should bring it forward to the PSNI so that light can be shone on the circumstances surrounding his death," he concluded.

Annalong

Detectives in Newry are also appealing for information after a report of a separate serious assault in the Ulster Avenue area of Annalong on the evening of Saturday, 22nd October.

The PSNI said it happened shortly before 11.50pm when the local man was walking through an area of waste ground when two unknown males assaulted him.

It is believed the male was hit on the head and received slash-type wounds to his face. The man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment to his injuries.

Man Dies In Stabbing Incident
A 30-year-old has died and a second man has been injured in a stabbing incident in Tullamore, Co Offaly, shortly after 7am this morning. It is believed there had been an argument in a house in the area and a Polish man was killed. The other man's injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
