Treatment Of Sex Victims 'Unacceptable'

A leading support organisation for victims of sex abuse has said that an overhaul of the criminal justice system is needed.

According to a report by One In Four the way that the Irish justice system treats victims of sexual crime is "simply unacceptable".

The report explains that after years of research into victims "harrowing experiences" engaging with the system they have come to believe a fundamental overhaul is required.

Over 900 adult survivors of child sex abuse use the One in Four support organisation, revealing the demand for such services is high.

The One and Four 2010 annual report said 182 attend the organisation for counselling and 749 for help in dealing with gardai, the Health Service Executive, or going to a criminal trial.

It was also noted that in addition to the 931 survivors of abuse, 21 sex offenders were also treated through the organisation’s treatment programme.

Some 25 families affected by sexual violence were also supported.

Executive Director Maeve Lewis said: "At One in Four we understand the horrendous pain that lies behind the statistics. We know that the effects of sexual abuse reverberate throughout a person’s life. That is why we make the protection of children a priority."

One in Four is the only Irish charity that deals with every aspect of sexual violence.
