Annual Garda Memorial Day Held

The annual Garda Memorial day took place at Memorial Garden Dublin Castle on Saturday.

The event was attended by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter TD, the Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan, church representatives and relatives of the Gardai who lost their lives in the line of duty.

In his speech the Garda Commissioner said: “The event provides an opportunity to acknowledge their contribution to policing and to the people they served. It also allows us to recognise the pain and loss to their families and all those they left behind”. He went on to say “An Garda Síochána is deeply fortunate to have such a beautiful setting here at which to commemorate our fallen colleagues”.

The memorial garden was officially opened last year by the Taoiseach and on that day medals were presented to the families and descendants of the 83 people on the Garda Roll of Honour who died in service of the State. On the 7th of May 2011 two further Garda members killed on duty: Garda James Byrne and Detective Garda Arthur Nolan had their names added to the Roll of Honour and medals were presented to their families.
