Corrib Report Reaches Commissioner

The Garda Commissioner has intercepted the commissioned report into the incident surrounding the arrest of two women protesters and alleged rape claims made by two gardaí in Co Mayo.

Following the investigation into the alleged remarks, Commissioner Martin Callinan will now consider appropriate disciplinary action.

The women were arrested for public order offences during the Shell to Sea protest last Thursday near the controversial Corrib gas pipeline route. The alleged remarks were recorded on a video camera belonging to one of the women. The camera was left running while the gardaí travelled to Belmullet garda station. During the recording the officers were allegedly heard joking about the deportation and rape of one of the women who refused to give her name.

Later today, one of the women is due to attend a press conference organised by the Shell to Sea campaign group in Dublin.
