Abolition Looms For Troubled Horse Fair

The Smithfield Horse Fair in Dublin is likely to be abolished after a shooting incident at the event, which left two people injured.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin Gerry Breen said he will write to the new Minister for Justice asking for the abolition of the fair following the violence, which also saw street fighting and the discovery of an unexploded device.

Gardai at the Bridewell said they were investigating the firearm incident in the Smithfield area of Dublin, which took place on Sunday morning at approximately 11.30am.

Two males (no ages currently available) received injuries that are not thought to be life threatening. They have been taken to hospitals in the city centre.

Gardaí said a suspect device was also found in the area and Army were tasked to the Bridewell Garda Station.

Gardai said they believed the incidents were linked to previous feuding families in Co Waterford.

A man in his 40s was arrested in connection with the shooting.

Gardai said between 4,000 and 5,000 Travellers had come from all over the country and the UK to attend the fair.

Officers said they were experiencing difficulties in finding witnesses to the incidents.

Gardai said they wished to appeal for witnesses to this incident or to anyone who may be able to assist with the investigation to contact the Bridewell Garda Station on 01-6668200, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Gardai Investigate After Man Is Shot
Gardai are carrying out an investigation after a man was shot in the leg and arm in Dublin. The incident occurred at around 6.30pm in Palmerstown Park in Ronanstown. The victim, 26, was taken to Connolly Hospital and his condition is not believed to be life threatening.

A man has been arrested in connection with the discovery of the bodies of two elderly brothers at their home in Castlebar on Wednesday. A home-help for the brothers alerted gardai at around 07:00 after she arrived at their home and found their bodies.

Man Dies Following Tipperary Car Crash
A man in his 20s has died following a car crash in Co Tipperary. The single-vehicle incident occurred on the N24 at Lacken, Kilshane at 4.40am this morning, Wednesday 07 February. It is understood the car left the road and struck a wall. The victim, the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.
