Road Tragedies Blight Ireland

There has been a litany of fatal road accidents across Ireland with a man aged in his 60s being killed following a crash in Co Tyrone.

The PSNI Police were called to the scene of the incident on the Gorticashel Road, Mountfield, outside Omagh, shortly after 4.30pm yesterday.

They were responding to a report that a tractor had left the road. The road was closed while police carried out an investigation. It is understood that no other vehicles were involved.

Meanwhile, three people, one of whom was an old age pensioner, have died in separate road collisions in the past 24 hours across the Republic of Ireland.

A man died this morning in Sligo General Hospital following a traffic collision in Donegal on January 24. The crash, involving two cars, happened at about 10am on the N15 at Ballybugan, Baltra.

The 38-year-old man who was the driver of the car was seriously injured in the crash and subsequently died. The collision is under investigation.

In the next incident, a 38-year-old female pedestrian was pronounced dead after she was struck by a truck at Bantry.

Gardaí said they are investigating the fatal collision that occurred at Slip, Bantry at approximately 4.30pm yesterday afternoon. This collision happened near the local creamery and the Co-Action Centre.

Gardaí are asking any witnesses that were in this area who have information to offer to contact them at Bantry on 027 20860.

Also yesterday, Gardaí at Waterford have launched an investigation into a fatal collision that occurred at approximately 6pm on The Quay in Waterford City.

During the incident a 71-year-old woman was struck by a car and taken to Waterford Regional Hospital. She was pronounced dead there a short time later.

The road at the scene of the collision is closed pending a forensic collision investigation.

Gardaí said they are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact Gardaí at Waterford on 051 305300.

Meanwhile, Gardaí at Carrickmacross investigating a fatal road traffic collision that occurred at Monaltybane on December 27 have arrested a 28-year-old man.

He has been charged in relation to the incident and was brought before a special sitting of Carrickmacross District Court at 8.30pm yesterday evening for a preliminary hearing

In the most recent incident, a motorcyclist collided with a pick-up truck towing a trailer, resulting in the death of the motorcyclist, a man in his late 20s. The collision which occurred at Cloghnadromin, Ballysimon, CoLimerick at approx 1.30pm on Sunday.

Four Killed On Irish Roads This Weekend
A number of separate road crashes this weekend have claimed four lives, including a father and son. John Gallagher, 55, and his 24-year-old son Sean died when their car collided with another vehicle at Burt on Saturday morning. The collision occurred at the junction of Slab Road, Burt, on the Main Letterkenny to Derry Road at approximately 10.

Two Pedestrians Killed In Collisions On Tuesday
Two men have been killed in separate traffic collisions on Tuesday. Gardaí at Bundoran are investigating the first collision that occurred on Main Street Bundoran at approximately 12.10am in the early hours of Tuesday morning. In the incident an 18-year-old pedestrian was killed when he was struck by an articulated lorry.

Two Dead In Separate Collisions
Two people have died on Ireland's roads after traffic collisions in Dublin and Kilkenny in the last two days. In the latest incident, a male aged 19 was fatally injured when the motorcycle he was driving collided with a stationary vehicle. His body was taken to Tallaght Hospital.
