Fatal Crash Probed By Police
A new road tragedy is today being investigated by Gardaí in Co Longford where the fatal road traffic collision occurred on the N55, Ballymahon to Edgeworthstown Rd at Carrickboy.
The crash occurred yesterday at approximately 4.30pm between two cars with two people injured and taken to Mullingar hospital where the male casualty, who was in his mid 70s, was pronounced dead.
The female driver of the other car, 46, received non-life threatening injuries. There were no other occupants in either car.
Part of the N55 was then closed for an examination by Gardaí Forensic Collision Investigators for a time but the road has now re-opened.
Gardaí wish to appeal for witnesses to this collision or to anyone that may have travelled this stretch of road around the time of the collision, to contact Granard Garda Station on 043 6687660, the Gardaí Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Gardaí Station.
Also yesterday, an elderly man died following a two-car crash along the border on the Newry bypass.
The tragedy happened at the Moneymore junction on the A1 carriageway near Newry shortly after 10.30am on Thursday and involved two vehicles.
The victim, aged 88, has not yet been named while a 34-year-old female who was the driver of one of the cars and her two passengers - a 40-year-old man and a newborn baby girl - were taken to hospital, suffering from shock.

There has been a litany of fatal road accidents across Ireland with a man aged in his 60s being killed following a crash in Co Tyrone. The PSNI Police were called to the scene of the incident on the Gorticashel Road, Mountfield, outside Omagh, shortly after 4.30pm yesterday. Galway Accident Fatal
There's been another fatal accident this morning. A man has died and a woman injured in a collision in Galway city's Sean Mulvoy Road. This is one of the main link roads on the north side of the city, and the crash happened shortly before 9am. The man who died was the driver of one of three cars involved in the collision.

A man has died in a road crash in Co Monaghan, gardaí have reported. According to gardaí the man in his 20s died in a two-car collision on the N2 Dublin-Monaghan, south of Carrickmacross. It is understood the victim was the driver of the one of the cars involved in the accident.
