Park Stab Teen 'On The Mend'

A teenager is recovering in hospital today after he being stabbed in a Dublin park in broad daylight.

The 17-year-old was knifed in the back in Fairview Park at about 5.30pm yesterday. He was taken to the Mater hospital for treatment but his injuries are not life-threatening.

Gardaí at Clontarf are investigating the stabbing and have appealed for information.

Responding to the attack, local Labour party councillor Aodhán Ó Riordáin accused the Government of losing the fight against gun and knife crime.

He said the knife attack happened less than a month after a man was shot in the head outside a Fairview pub.

"It is clear that the Government has failed absolutely to tackle the gun and knife culture that has exploded in Dublin on their watch," said Mr Ó Riordáin.

"Young people are now bereft of direction or empowerment are now seeking that empowerment from knives and guns.

"The Government reaction is to cut diversion programmes, to cut youth employment programmes, to cut community employment programmes, to cut schemes in schools that work to help children and young adults to seek the right road and to make the right choices."

Gardai at Clontarf are investigating the stabbing and have appealed for information.
