Gardai at Cavan are investigating the incident, which involved only one vehicle fatal. The incident occurred at Beaghy, Stradone, four miles out from the Dublin side of Cavan town, at approximately 3.50pm.

The 43-year-old was taken Cavan General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The road is currently closed pending completion of an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Diversions are in place. The road is expected to open later tonight.

Gardai said the wished to appeal for witnesses to this collision or to anyone who may be able to assist them with their investigation to contact Cavan Garda Station on 049 4368800 or the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111.

Meanwhile, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) have, today urged road users to take extra care as the number of tractors, trailers and other farm machinery using the roads increases over the summer months.

The appeal comes in advance of the June Bank Holiday Weekend, which is traditionally a high risk period on the road. The holiday also coincides with the publication of new research from the RSA, which indicates that a total of 31 fatal and 47 serious injury collisions have occurred on public roads, involving agricultural vehicles and other road users, in the five year period 2004 to 2009.

Advising road users, Noel Brett, of the Road Safety Authority, said: "This is a very busy time of year for farmers it's the start of the silage cutting season and the number of tractors and trailers out using the roads will increase dramatically. As a result, the risk of a collision involving a road user and farm machinery has increased.

"As such I am asking all drivers to be on the look out for tractors, trailers and other farm machinery exiting from fields and farm yards. If you are travelling behind farm machinery, please be patient and only over take when it's safe to do so. We should all expect the unexpected, as danger could literally be around the next corner."(DW/BMcC)
