Cash Aid For Drug Task Force
Drug abuse in the mid west is to be tackled with news of a further cash allocation to deal with the problem.
Clare Fianna, the Fail TD and Minister Tony Killeen welcomed the allocation of €25,000 to the Mid West Regional Drugs Task Force (MWRDTF).
They said that the MWRDTF is among 14 Local Drugs Task Forces and 10 Regional Drugs Task Forces to benefit from the Government's Capital Premises Fund 2010 for Task Force voluntary and community-based projects.
According to Minister Killeen: "The purpose of the capital premises fund is to meet identified emerging 'once off' capital needs in existing Local and Regional Task Force areas to cater for drug specific task force projects."
He added: "The €25,000 allocation is in respect of small refurbishment works and/or the purchase of equipment, which have a significant benefit and impact at community level.
"All existing projects in the Mid West Task Force Region will have the opportunity to apply for funding under this scheme through the MWRDTF."
The Minister of State added that the funding announcement by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs was evidence of the Government's ongoing commitment to fully implementing the National Drugs Strategy.
"Community based projects, such as those provided by the Mid West Regional Drugs Task Force, are central to tackling drugs misuse and implementing the National Drugs Strategy.
"There must be services on the ground to deliver programmes to those most in need.
"There is no doubting that the MWRDTF has done tremendous work over the last number of years to foster and progress this," he stated.
The MWRDTF was established under the National Drugs Strategy (2001-2008) to research, develop, implement and monitor a co-ordinated response to illicit drug use at regional level, based on evidence of what is effective.
The Task Force is responsible for ensuring the development of a co-ordinated response to tackling drugs problems in counties Clare, Limerick, North Tipperary and Limerick City.

Two Arrested Following Firearms And Drugs Find
Two men have been arrested after two firearms and a small quantity of cannabis and cocaine were discovered by Gardai at a house in the Castleknock area yesterday afternoon. The men, aged 24 and 26, are currently being detained at Blanchardstown Garda Station under Section 30 Offences against the State Act 1939.

New Powers Allow For Roadside Drug Testing
The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross has announced the commencement of the drug driving provisions in the Road Traffic Act 2016. One of the key measures in the legislation provides for Preliminary Drug Testing, which will enable Gardaí to test motorists whom they suspect of driving under the influence of drugs at the roadside.

Gardaí Arrest 45 In Major Drugs Operation
A total of 45 people have been arrested in the past 48 hours in Gardaí a crackdown on the sale and supply of heroin and “crack” cocaine in the Dublin region. The operation, which involved Garda drug units from Kevin Street, Pearse Street and Store Street stations, resulted in 150 charges being brought, according to Gardaí this morning.
