Border Shooting Condemned

A 24-year-old man is recovering in hospital after being shot in both legs in a paramilitary style attack on Monday evening.

A Northern politician, SDLP West Tyrone Westminster candidate Joe Byrne has condemned the shooting: "This was an undemocratic attack on the people of Strabane. The people of Strabane don't want this and don't deserve attacks of this nature.

"Nobody has the right to be judge, jury and executioner. The Strabane area has suffered from this type of behaviour in the past and it does not need it now or in the future.

"The SDLP have been condemning this type of behaviour for the past 40 years.

"They were wrong then and they are wrong now and have no place in the society we want to build," he said.

"I appeal to anyone with information regarding this crime to contact the police without delay. The justice system is the only way we can deal with problems in our society and everybody needs to embrace the law of the courts."

The incident happened shortly after 11pm when four men entered a house at Lisnafin Park in the border town of Strabane.

The victim was forced into the garden where the attack took place.

Police are working to establish a motive for the attack.

The PSNI said that anyone who witnessed the shooting or anyone with any other information is asked to contact police in Strabane on 0845 600 8000.

Alternatively information about crime can be given anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
